Perfect Color Combinations

Wedding planning can be stressful; there are so many things on your plate that you can take a wrong turn and be lost in Alice’s Wonderland!

Choosing wedding colors can be tricky. But don’t worry; Halo Brides Hair & Makeup and Better Homes and Gardens have the top five color combinations for your wedding day:

Orange and Green. This classic pair is perfect for any time of year. For a summer wedding use this pair with white linens. Warm it up for a winter wedding with brown linens. Be bold with orange flowers. Our favorite picks are roses, calla lilies, and dahlias.

Light Pink and Brown. Stick with pink flowers. Roses, peonies, and ranunculus are a few of our favorites. Use brown as the foundation color for your table linens and bridesmaids’ dresses. Combine the two colors on your wedding stationery. For a classic look use brown paper and highlight your monogram in a pretty pink.

Purple and Blue. You’ll have plenty of ways to use these two tones together. Consider mixing your bouquets with both shades of flowers. Choosing deep purples mixed with light blues creates an elegant and modern feel. When pairing blues, make sure to lay out the tones side by side to ensure a cohesive palette.

Cranberry and Bold Pink. The ‘Stargazer’ lily is the perfect inspiration for this rich color scheme. Ask your florist which flowers work well together in this scheme. Try mixing different textures like bold peonies paired with ‘Stargazer” lilies. Consider black or white for foundation pieces such as bridesmaids’ dresses and table linens. These bold colors will pop when paired with a neutral. Use splashes of pink and cranberry for smaller accessories like napkins and favors.

Black, White, and Green. This is the perfect pairing for a modern and elegant look. Use lighter green flowers like the green roses paired with banana leaves found in this bouquet. For your bridesmaids try a green dress paired with a black sash. For a very modern look, consider using a black sash on your dress too. Use the colors together through cute accents like this bouquet wrapped in black-and-white ribbon.

Don’t be afraid to play with your colors. If you have two favorites, use them both! There are many ways to mix and match that will add YOUR personality to the wedding details.

2012 Bridal Dress Trends

With the year 2011 coming to an end, brides are setting dates for 2012, and are setting the trends. Halo Brides Hair & Makeup are always being asked what the next biggest trend is, and according to Brides.com, some 2012 bridal trends are:

  • Illusion Neckline. The illusion style is created when a sheer, delicate and often embellished layer of fabric is added to cover all or part of the space that is otherwise exposed in a strapless gown.  It can transform the whoa! of way too much cleavage into something soft, elegant and romantic.
  • Tiers. Some trends are better on the runway than down the aisle. Last season in skirts, three-dimensional florals hit critical mass. This season, designers focused on hemlines, creating skirts with two distinct tiers. Call it an exaggerated form of the peplum detail from previous seasons, and this time, it’s superflattering—the top tier is a genius way to camouflage wider hips.
  • Lace Sleeves. With all the buzz around the Royal wedding, it’s no surprise the iconic lace sleeves on Princess Diana’s wedding gown have resurfaced.
  • Horsehair Trim. It’s a synthetic fabric often used on the underskirts of gowns to create a cleaner shape and a crisper hemline. Continuing with the trend of turning dresses inside-out (see last season’s corsets), designers are now exposing this underlay fabrication, either as a visible hemline treatment or a lavishly looped sash or bodice detail. It works to create incredible volume and dimension on ballgowns and also provides a unique, frothy-yet-modern textural element.
  • Blush. Wearing a wedding gown in a non-white or ivory hue was, until recently, considered a pretty radical move. Then, a few seasons ago, we began seeing subtle pops of color—from the faintest hint of silver or lilac to bright lettuce green—but color was still the exception rather than the rule. This season, however, blush and pink shades appeared on dozens of runways, marking its official debut as an expected—not quirky—wedding gown hue.

No matter what the dress trend you decide is best for you, Halo Brides Hair & Makeup can help achieve it by complimenting with hair and makeup. For more information about Halo Brides’ services, check out our Facebook page!

Practice Makes Perfect

One thing Halo Brides Hair & Makeup is that practice makes perfect. Therefore, all of our brides have at least one trial run before the big day. On this day, we will show you three looks: two of your picks (we encourage you to bring photos, magazine clippings, headpieces, etc. – any idea you have!) and one stylist fav. You stylist will show you a look that is slightly different and takes into account your hair type, dress neckline, weather and headpiece. This not only gives you the chance to perfect your bridal look, but also allows you to meet your makeup artists and work out day-of details.

For your trial run to go smoothly and efficiently , our professional airbrush artist and stylist Kari Shuler has a few tips:

  • Come with a clean, makeup-less face. If you come with product on, your makeup artist will have to remove it before beginning your trial. Arriving with a clean face will save time and allow you to get the most out of your trial session.
  • Do research and bring photos. You’ll want to have photos of looks you like, as well as ones you don’t like.
  • Bring images of your wedding day details – your dress, veil, bridesmaid dresses, venue and more. These items will help your makeup artist get a feel for the style of your wedding, as well as your personal taste.

During your trial, the team will show you the different looks, playing with various colors, themes, and applications. Your perfect wedding day look will be complete! The team that creates your look during the trial run will be the exact same for all occasions (bachelorette party AND engagement photo day, if you choose, along with the wedding day).

In today’s age, wedding colors are so much more expansive and various than the traditional white. Our bridal expert, Rachael Grissel, put together a list of the top wedding color trends for brides, bridesmaids, and ceremony/reception!

Desert Sand

Robins Egg Blue

Blush

We love all of these colors and look forward to playing with them in hair accessories and makeup. These colors can be mixed and matched, or stand on their own. Either way, they’re all gorgeous! For more information, see our Facebook page!

Bridal Traditions

Many brides today use old traditions in their ceremonies and receptions…some more traditional than others. But where do these traditions come from? Your Wedding 101 has out together a list of traditional wedding practices, and we love them so much, Halo Brides Hair & Makeup is sharing them with you!

Old, New, Borrowed, Blue
The saying, “Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” is a popular rhyme that has been used since Victorian times. The “something old” represents the bond to the bride’s family and her old life; “something new” represents the couple’s new life together and their future hope for happiness, prosperity and success; “something borrowed” from a happily married woman is meant to impart similar happiness to the bride; and “something blue” represents fidelity and constancy.

White Bridal Dresses
Wearing white also dates back to Victorian times when Queen Victoria abandoned the usual royal tradition of wearing a silver gown, instead choosing to wear white. Before that time brides simply wore their best gown, rather than a special wedding dress.

Throwing Rice
Showering the couple with rice is an ancient tradition. As rice is considered a “life giving” seed it is thought that by throwing in on the couple they will be bestowed with fertility and have many children. Many churches now forbid it on their property but there are some safe alternatives to throwing rice .

Sharing the first piece of wedding cake is a wedding tradition with Roman roots. The Romans believed that by eating the wedding cake together a special bond was created between the couple. The wheat used to bake the cake was symbolic of fertility and a “fruitful union”, while the cake’s sweetness was thought to bring sweetness to all areas of the couple’s new life.

The ceremonial kiss that concludes the wedding ceremony is said to represent the couple sharing and joining their souls. In Roman times the kiss “sealed” the couple’s agreement to join in a life-long commitment.

The wedding tradition of the groom wearing a boutonniere originates in medieval times when a knight wore his lady’s colors (through flowers) as a statement of his love. Flowers and bouquets have long been used in weddings. In addition to adorning the bride with flowers to promote good luck and good health flower meanings allow the bride to express her feelings for the groom. Orange blossoms signify purity, daisies loyalty, violets modesty and red roses signify true love.

Placing the wedding ring on the third finger of the left hand has two possible origins; ancient Egypt or 17th century Europe. The Egyptians believed the “vein of love” ran directly from the ring finger to the heart, therefore the ring was placed there to denote eternal love. During a 17th century wedding ceremony the groom would slide the wedding ring part way up the bride’s thumb, index finger and middle finger as the priest said “In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit”. As the ring finger was the first free finger, the ring was placed there.

Some brides add their own twists to these traditions, some brides follow them exactly, and some merely use them as guidelines. But however each individual bride uses them, traditions live on! Classic Style With a Modern Twist

Our Halo Brides Hair and Makeup bridal expert, Rachael Grissel, gave us the top five HOTTEST bridal trends for Fall 2011. The most popular one is the Care Free, Yet Refined Look. Typically we see hair styles that are either very polished or care free and relaxed but this fall we will be seeing a hybrid of the two!

  • A classic pinup style that has been mussed up to give it a modern feel. We see celebrities rocking this style on red carpets and special events, and now you can too! The secret is to not be too polished. Embrace those soft curls, try Phyto Professional Curl Energizing Cream, style into a vintage 1920,30 or 40’s style and then stop! Don’t hairspray those stray pieces! Add a modern touch with accessories such as flowers or pins.

  • A french twist or beehive that isn’t polished, more separation in the hair and a just thrown up look. Keep your brush away from you head and separate the knots with your fingers. Either take a mousse and blower dryer to your hair, or let it dry naturally and then pin it back with bobby pins. Again, stay away from the hairspray and let pieces fall to frame your face!

  • A messy bun set low or high has the basics of a polished look, but those stray pieces add a touch of the mess, undone feel that is very trendy.

Don’t worry, brides, you definitely DON’T have to perfect these all alone! Halo Brides Hair & Makeup stylists are here to help! See our Facebook page for more information and tips!

Fall Bridal Tips from the Expert

Rachael Grissel, Wedding Coordinator for Halo Brides Hair & Makeup tells us all the hottest bridal trends she’s seeing for fall 2011.

1. Care Free, Yet Refined Look
Typically we see hair styles that are either very polished or care free and relaxed but this fall we will be seeing a hybrid of the two such as:

– A classic pinup style that has been mussed up to give it a modern feel
– A french twist or beehive that isnt polished, more separation in the hair and a just thrown up look
– A messy bun set low or high

2. Flowers, Feathers, Bows…Oh My!
Hair accessories are all the rage from floral and feather fascinators, to over sized bows.

3. The More Unusual The Better
Some more off beat things we have seen… veils made out of ribbon, bouquets made entirely out of buttons or brooches.

4. Shorter Hemlines to Show Off Those Legs
Brides are opting for shorter dresses, and as predicted we are starting to see white bridesmaids gowns… a definate nod to Kate Middleton.

5.  Earth-Tone Colors Are In
Popular wedding and bridesmaid colors include- desert sand, robins egg blue, blush, gold, charcoal, and rustic brown.
